PFT helps diagnose cause of cough, wheezing and difficulty breathing
Reason for the test include:
• Asthma
• Emphysema
• Chronic bronchitis
• Measure how a lung problem is affecting you
• Evaluate symptoms
• Determine how a treatment is working
• Evaluate lung function prior to surgery
What to expect:
• Some asthma medicines or inhalers may need to be held
• Do not, eat, smoke or exercise 4 to 8 hours prior to the test
• Wear loose clothing
Description of test
Technician will explain how each test is done and how the machines work. You will have to wear a nose clip
If you experience difficulty during the test please tell the technician immediately
We perform spirometry on the day of the appointment if requested by the patient or if otherwise clinically indicated
In patients with asthma we have the capability to do exhaled nitric oxide test
Complete pulmonary function testing is available and includes
Spirometry
Lung volumes and lung capacities (refer to the volume of air associated with different phases of the respiratory cycle).
