COPD is divided into two types:

#1 Emphysema:

This disease is seen frequently in cigarette smokers.

This is a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath. In people with emphysema, the tissues necessary to support the physical shape and function of the lungs are destroyed.

Not every patient who carries a diagnosis of COPD or emphysema will need oxygen. However those patients who do need oxygen benefit from it. The most important thing you can do for you health is quit to smoking.

#2 Chronic Bronchitis:

The predominant symptom is cough. This disease is seen in patients who smoke or have smoked in the past.

Usually involves persistent cough with phlegm and mucus, for at least three months of the year in two consecutive years.
